Provisional Ballot Status for the 2006 Primary Election

Every provisional ballot application is reviewed by the appropriate county board of elections to determine whether the application should be accepted in full, accepted in part or rejected.

Explanation of Provisional Statuses:

  • For a provisional ballot to be accepted in full it must be cast by a registered voter in the precinct in which that voter resides.
  • For a provisional ballot to be accepted in part it must be cast by a registered voter in a precinct other than the one in which the voter resides. In this instance, the county board of elections will count only those contests for which the voter is eligible to vote (based on his or her resident address as indicated on the provisional ballot application).
  • There are several reasons why a provisional ballot may be rejected:
    1. The person who cast the provisional ballot was not a registered voter. - If you were not registered to vote, the information you provided on the provisional ballot application will be used to register you to vote. If the application was complete, you should receive a voter notification card within three weeks and will be eligible to vote in the November 7th General Election. If you do not receive a voter notification card within 3 weeks, please call the county board of elections (link to county list) in the county in which you reside.
    2. The person returned a voted absentee ballot. - If you voted and returned an absentee ballot, your provisional ballot was not counted because you voted more than once.
    3. The person voted the wrong party primary ballot. - If you claimed to be registered with a party other than the party listed in the precinct register, you were given a provisional ballot. If the election office did not receive a timely request to change your party affiliation, your provisional ballot was rejected. Remember, the deadline to change party affiliation was June 19, 2006. Any changes in party affiliation received after that date are processed after the Primary Election.
    4. Identification or DL# or SS# was not timely received. - Certain first-time voters must provide identification or a driver's license or social security number before voting. If you did not provide this information before the counting of provisional ballots began, your provisional ballot was rejected.
